1 month budget travel with kids in Hokkaido (19) Where to stay

30th Sept 2015

One of the expenses that can't be avoid is the stay during the trip. Different people like different style and price range, therefore, the below are different categories found in Hokkaido.

The one I have chosen :
I was first attracted to AIRBNB by their interesting travel advertisement. All the landmarks are hand made and presented creatively.
You can find cheap range to luxury range;
apartments, home stay, dormitory, big family room, hostels;
in all over the world and the list of lodging is increasing too
Use this code and you enjoy a deduction of $25 for your first stay ( based on May 2015)
www.airbnb.com.sg/c/stan3266?s=8

The other option I had and have been using it since the day they were established. Toyoko Inn is a widely found in every prefecture in Japan, Busan,Korea and expanding to China too.
The attraction is not only the price, it's free buffet breakfast! & free wifi! On top of that, in some prefectures, they even provide free dinner! Simple Japanese business hotels that have bath tub bigger than Japanese residential ones, yet smaller than the standard hotel in Singapore, it is still consider comfortable. If you join membership before checking in, you get to enjoy member discount too!

Before reading more, what interest you?
  • Home stays
  • Dormitories
  • Service apartments
  • Weekly/ short term rental apartments
  • Business hotels
  • Well known hotels

Would you like to enjoy big room and comfortable services or even onsen included? You value your own private space very much and want to have the whole apartment to yourself and family?
Or it is just a place to sleep, as long as it is clean, size does not matter? You are open to have cultural exchange with a local host and maybe get to know more foreigners in the same area?

1 month budget travel with kids in Hokkaido (18) :What to wear

30th Sept 2015

Hokkaido compared to Singapore which is a all-year-round summer country, is cooling even during summer.

Summer
For kids
Short sleeves with cardigan or long sleeves for children will be comfortable. Usually it is the strong wind that I would add additional long sleeve jacket or cardigan while walking to destination.

For adults
Short sleeve will be enough. For those who are worry, can bring cardigan along. The wind is cooling like aircon.

End spring and early autumn
For kids  choose a thicker coat or winter jacket. Sometimes a thicker long sleeve top will be enough for kids as they run around and have higher temperature.

For adutls, same as kids

Early spring, early and end winter , late autumn
For kids
  • waterproof winter jacket
  • kniited or wool sweater
  • long sleeve top
  • legging or tight pant
  • jeans/pants with fleece lining or snow pants
  • hat, scraft, gloves, socks, leg warmer ( to be placed in bag for sudden cold wind)
  • sport shoes / boots
For adults, same as kids' attire.

Winter
For kids
  • waterproof winter jacket/ ski jacket
  • fleece jacket
  • kniited or wool sweater
  • turtle neck long seeve top
  • long sleeve top
  • legging or tight pant
  • jeans/pants with fleece lining or snow pants
  • hat, scraft, gloves, socks, leg warmer
  • waterproof boots
Standby fleece/wool vest in bag in case kids will feel cold. However, do note that when indoor , heater is switch on and it can be very warm that kids will want to remove most, let them do so as they know what they want. Overdress will result in sweating and end up catching cold which is a taboo in winter.

Adult can reduce accordingly to each needs.

Where to buy?
 From USA
Old Navy , Gap, KOHL's, Gymboree

From Singapore
Coldwear, Wings,Robinson, Metro, Factory outlets, Song & Song

From China
Taobao
( Cut tag, local brand, factory outlets )

From Japan
Nissen, Nishimatsuya, Akachan Honpo, Uniqlo

1 month budget travel with kids in Hokkaido (17): Shoes

27th Sept 2015

The right pair of shoes is important not just for comfortable, it is for safety too. Walking on melt snow that had turn ice, it is very very slippery and any wrong footstep would end up in hospital.

From the news, it was reported that in 2014, the highest slip and fall cases were in Dec when longer interval between each snow fall. When snow melt due to heat from surrounding, the cold nights below zero degree celsius frozen all the water left in the day. Cars skid easily too and we had an experience when our host from Kushiro nearly lost control due to the ice on the road. Later he explained that once night fall, water from melt snow froze as ice and there is no longer any friction on the road unless the wheels are chained.

Therefore it is very important to find a pair of good waterproof shoes with non slip sole.

You could buy in Japan in shops like ABC mart which is economy comparing the price from departmental stores. For kids, you could buy from ABC marts which only outlets sell, the one in Sapporo station, above bus terminal has. Akanchan Honpo has a wide range. Do remember to check out the waterproof spray for fabric, it can be a saver during high snow!

In Singapore, I hardly see a good range with affordable price for holiday purpose. Unless you would be using this pair of shoes for months or years which is not possible. The other alternative will be from taobao, cheaper, more designs but not every sellers has good quality or pictures showed are exactly the items sold, yet it is worth exploring.

When choosing shoes, look out for these features:
  •  Waterproof material : very good waterproof pvc/ umbrella material or partial rainboot base and front area
  • Knee protection: knee or high boots to prevent snow from getting in. Keeping warm and reduce injuries
  • Non slip soles : there are non-slip soles to add on in the cobble in streets, look normal soles but it really prevent slipping.
  • Warm inner : With warm cushioning, it gives warm and also comfort, even wearing normal socks.
  • Price: according to each individual's preference. Can be as cheap as S$10 - S$400. Any cheaper, you expect surprises along the way.

For kids, allow them to try and choose, in situation like buying from online, let them choose from the pictures too . It would add excitement for the trip.

1 month budget travel with kids in Hokkaido (9) : Where to go - Ski resorts near Sapporo

6th August 2015

Not known to many foreigners, Hokkaido is a land of ski! Just in Sapporo city, there are about 20 ski resorts without having to travel far. There are about 60 ski resorts in Hokkaido itself!! If you want to master ski or have ultimate snow experience, go Hokkaido!

The first ski resort in Hokkaido that is widely promoted is Niseko. It is a beautiful four season area, yet being a tourism spot, it is very crowded during winter.  Be sure to book early for accommodation as the hotels are easily fully booked. It is also to my surprise that AIRBNB has apartment for rent in Niseko too.
The down side of Niseko is it only has 1 to 2 trains to and fro from Otaru. If you miss the train, you will be trapped with worries on where to sleep for the night. Alternatively, plan for an overnight to enjoy the trip up.
I actually aborted my plan to travel to Niseko based on the time to travel and the daily frequency for train to and fro Sapporo. I could spend more time and less worries in the nearby international standard ski resort too.

The list of the Ski resort with detailed information are as followed:

1 month budget travel with kids in Hokkaido (8) : Where to go - Zoo, Aquarium and Wild

26th June 2015

Meeting animals are also always in the itinerary for many parents. However not many parents realised that there are more than Asahiyama Zoo.

Personally I love Asahiyama Zoo as I watched a Japanese movie about how the zoo keepers changed a closing zoo to a No 1 in Japan with the creative layout and education information around the park. The real close up with animals are really wonderful experience to both adults and children. Standing just next to the next acrylic transparent wall, kids can see a hippo so closely that even what it has eaten for lunch can be seen. They have special platform for kids to watch penguins  along the transparent wall for penguin show case. With the penguin standing just next to the wall, they seemed to be stand next to you. There are many different types of  penguin species too.

Other zoo offer different attraction and experience too. Like Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe and Otaru aquarium, they are popular choices too.

1 month budget travel with kids in Hokkaido (2) : Why Japan?

    26th June 2015

    Many asked me why Japan?

    Safety
Alone with 2 kids, my first priority is safety. Can I let go and let kids run around and exploring without having to worry?

The surrounding countries have high risk that I might lose either kid and never to see again.

    Food
Can I enjoy food without risk or minimal risk of food poisoning? Can we just consume food along the way? Are the food suitable for kids and I do not have to specially cook due to unsuitable choice of food? Is it easy to buy ready food or even groceries?

In Korea, unless kids do not mind having spicy food every meals, most kids end up having to struggle or require to buy and cook back in hotel.

    Children friendly
Do they have children friendly services?
It is easy to find nursing rooms, play room even in baby store.  They have also such special room " multipurpose room" for these purposes.

Pram can be easily push around without having to carry both the pram and kid on the stairs. Neither do I have to struggle pushing pram on uneven paths.

Do they have escalator instead of staircases only?

Currently, they have escalators for almost all train station, with most with elevators.

Comparing to 2 decades ago in Japan, I remembered that I have to carry my heavy luggages up and down few storeys high stairs to transfer trains or getting in /out of train stations.

Japanese do not complain about not having escalators and elevators, as Japanese children are trained from young to use only staircase. Even during school field trip, they carry their own heavy luggage up the stairs.  That is actually a very good training in developing endurance!

    Public transportation
Can I travel from one place to another without driving? Do I need to rely heavily on taxi ?
    Are the services frequent?

If I will to use taxi frequently, my budget will increase. In Japan, using JR Pass , for this case, Hokkaido JR Pass, it is unlimited for that valid period.

Am I able to base in one location and travel to and fro within a day?
I prefer travelling in the day and base in almost 1 location to reduce the travelling hassle of check in , check out, move luggage along the way. The time spend checking in , checking out could reduce with the travelling time on public transportation while base in one location.

    Self-Drive
Many prefer self drive around or getting a chartered coach around.

Most important is I don't drive. Rather than being stressed getting myself from one place to another, I would rather sit on a train or a bus that send me to where I want to go.

The other concern is driiving in winter. In all year round summer Singapore, we do not have experience in driving in bad snow weather, neither do we have the skill to drive a chain wheeled vehicle. Car skid often in snow covered road, how can I be sure that I know how to handle it and do not endanger my kids' lives? Even locals have fear driving in snow, what about us?

    Safe
Japan except Fukushima is safe from radiation!! Even in Fukushima prefecture alone, some are are safe from radiation, agriculture are safe for consumption. Hokkaido being so far away is definitely safe to stay.

    Japanese Yen at low rate. ( 100yen = 1.11)
At such a low rate, it is so much worth going.

We used to think Japan is so expensive to go as they have higher living standard and high exchange rate.
With Singapore living standard getting higher, we are almost the same if Japanese Yen exchange is low.  So why not enjoy a trip to Japan that has better food, better enjoyment and safer?

On top of all these, I am a Japanese speaking person so moving around is ok for me.
Many do not know that without knowing Japanese, it is easy to travel in Hokkaido too. Many can communicate well in English and Mandarin now.

    Travelling time
Travelling approx 7 hours , there are many choices. By land, we can travel up to Kuala Lumpur, by sea, we have reached Batam. By Air, we can also reach Perth, Melbourne, Bandung, Thailand or even Hong Kong.

Comparing 7 hours flight to Melbourne, similar surrounding with nature, farm and children friendly places. Being a black hair Asian, it is common too with Asian students and immigrants. However, I dislike the quarantine spray before descending and the restriction of bringing food into country to protect their agriculture. Kids have preferences and do not understand why the sudden forbidden of their favourite food. There is also no way young kids can understand after parents have explained, ending up everyone is frustrated.

Travelling is already physically tiring , why add up to mental stress?

1 month budget travel with kids in Hokkaido (1) : what triggers

    24 June 2015

    What triggers

2 months ago , hubby commented that he found new apps with good lodging, so I went to explore. I found studio apartment in Sapporo only SGD$700 per month!! Other studio apartment varies from SGD$800 to $1,400 which are also cheap to stay for a month.

    Why 1 month?
Many friends asked me : " Why one month?"
    I replied simply with " 1 week costs SGD$350, 1 month costs SGD$700!"
Since I have to buy air tickets, lodging is the next expensive needs to travelling. If I can save by having rented apartment, experience typical local lifestyle, it will be even better for the kids.

    Experiences
This is different experience comparing hotel stay, it will be cultural exchange in a more casual mode.

1 month in Hokkaido during winter season , it will be another true season experience comparing to just one week holiday. There are many unexpected situations to children in Singapore whom do not have four seasons naturally.  Just getting into Snow City, Snow in Container are just short chill and easy-to-forget experience, but 1  month, survival skills step in as it becomes daily what needs to do situation.

Towels don't get to change daily, clothes need to go to laundromat , no breakfast included, the list of discomfort continues

Just from another perspective, hotels are promoting changing less towels for environment friendly, more coin laundromat are opening everywhere in Singapore right now, breakfast can be settled easily along the way to train stations.

The basic line is are you willing to be open to different experience? Is it a must to really change towels daily? Do you change towels daily at home? Are your breakfast prepared at home?

Where to find this good lodging deal?
I was first attracted to AIRBNB by their interesting travel advertisement. All the landmarks are hand made and presented creatively.
    You can find cheap range to luxury range;
    apartments, home stay, dormitory, big family room, hostels;
in all over the world and the list of lodging is increasing too
