Obihiro Zoo

Obihiro Zoo is a small yet interesting zoo! There are many animals that you will not believe that they are in such a small zoo.At the end of the route, you get to pat goats, stroke hamsters and guinea pigs and there are other activities too. Not forgetting, if you have complete the stamp collection around the zoo, you get a special gift too. Nevertheless, we spent 4 hours and it was not enough to complete the whole zoo.

In early winter, the opening hours is only 4 hours. It is closed from mid Dec to end Apr of the next year. With the normal walking route is covered by snow, the shortcut to zoo is walk up the hill and around the entire zoo before reaching the entrance. It was a challenge as I was still carrying a child while walking up the hill. In spring and summer, it will be a good walking trail to see small animals. we saw squirrels while walking towards the zoo.

Ryugetsu is a famous cake brand in Obihiro. The layered cake (三方六) is their signature cake.

Sweetpia garden is their factory which allows public to view their production.

All links are in Japanese.

PLEASE NOTE: Before 9am, the staff will give out number to purchase the edges of the layered log cake ( 4 pieces at 500yen) and it is very popular and cheap. For this amount of cake, you will need to buy about 3,500yen in retail. To Japanese, the edges do not have good presentation and therefore, they sell it cheaply every morning.

This is a secret only among the Japanese!! Please do not give up the number!! I met a family who told the staff that they didn't want the cake and returned the number!!  They didn't know about it and when they knew that, they thought that there would be another round of distribution later. It was sad to see them missed the special cake offer.

Direction: There is no bus to Sweetpia Garden and the only transportation mode is taxi. From Obihiro station to destination is 3,200yen ( Approximately SGD $40) per trip. On your way back, you can ask the staff to book a taxi without additional booking charges.

If you just want to buy their cakes, biscuits and limited season items, you can also go to their shop just next to JR Obihiro station.

幸福駅 Koufuku train station

Koufuku train station is an old deserted train line that has stopped and now became attraction spot for people who want to be blessed.  If you want to be fortunate and happy, this is the place to be 幸福!

Many couples will travel all the way to Obihiro to this spot to take their wedding photos, buy and paste the train ticket in the house.

Just beside you can see the old signboards and waiting area. There used to be a cat train master, it should be there when the store is opened.

Please note that day light is short during winter, so by around 4pm, it will turn dark. Before you take a bus from Obihiro station, please check with the tourism centre the return bus schedule.  It is about 40mins frequency and the bus stop has changed to main road and need to walk about 15-20mins before you reach the old bus stop. It used to be just at the junction of the old train station.

When you are returning, please note that the waiting hunt is across the road while the bus stand is further down. It is advisable to stand at the waiting hunt as brighter and warmer too.  I was worried so we stood at the bus stand and hoping that the bus driver will not miss as the whole road is dark without much lights. My concern was if the bus had missed the waiting hunt, then we would have to wait another 40mins!!

You can check out for day tour at the tourism centre if you are worried about missing bus.

Direction: At Obihiro Bus terminal, it is easy to spot the bus as on top of the bus will indicate to
幸福駅. It is on the right lane with a rainbow bus. Journey takes about 45-50mins.

If you are early, you can consider going to 愛国駅 ( Aikoku station ). In this stop, there is a small museum about the history of this old rail track and there is an old locomotive on display.

If you are planning for a relax trip to Obihiro, you can consider 3 days 2 nights.
